Day 01: Chennai (previously known as Madras)

Kapaleeswar:
This is a biggest and ancient shiva temple in Chennai.A masterpiece of Dravidian style and displays the architectural elements, gopurams, mandapams and tank. You can see here. Later visit

Sree parthasarathy temple:
The lord Krishna was originally built by the pallavas in the 18th century and renovated 16th century by the vijayanagaras. Its houses the five avatars, of lord Vishnu. Vedavalli Amai it is the oldest surviving temple in chennai.

St.Maries Church: It was built in 1678-80.This is the first English church in chennai. And also the oldest surviving British church in India. There are reminders in the church of Clive who was Married here in 1753, There are many contemporary paintings too.

Kalashethra: Devoted the revival of classical arts was founded by Rukmini devi Arundale in 1936.Classical dance, Music, traditional textiles and weaving are most popular here.

The theosophical society:
The tranquil spot of the banks of the Adyar River. There is a huge Banyan tree with its branches spreading area over an area of 40,000 sq.feet.

Day 02:  Chennai – Mahabalipuram

Shore temple: The shore temple comprises three stages. One dedicated lord Vishnu, and The other two to Shiva. It was built by king Rajasimha. The walls of the temple showcase the finest stage of Dravidian architecture.

Arjuna Penance:
The skill fully carved rock structure depicts the penance of the pandava Prince Arjuna.It is the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world. Other carving found here depict. The panchathantra stories and figures of various animals.

Kanchipuram:
As also known as the city of thousands temples.This is 66km west of Mahabalipuram.It was the capital of the pallava dynasty. This city is also famous for its hand Woven silk sarees.

Aurobindo Ashramam:
The houses of Shri Aurobindo and the mother (mirra alfasa French Women who accepted Aurobindo as her spiritual mentor and guide and later became his most Important diciple). The courtyards are the samadhis of Aurobindo and the mother where their mortal remains have been enshrined. pondicherry-aurobindo-ashram

Pondicherry
Beach: The beaches are the best place to relax in pondicherry.1500 m long Beach that borders the town is the eastern side is clean and is an ideal place for swimming And sun bathing. There are two monuments of historical significance on this beach. One is the 4m tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the other is the war memorial built by the France in commemoration of the soldiers who died in the First World War. The light, which stands 29m, it is over 150years old.

Churches in
Pondicherry: There are several of churches that are worthy of a visit. One of the Most beautiful is the church of the sacred heart of Jesus located on south boulevard. It is built in the gothic style and has three stained glass panels in a corridor behind the altar which Exhibits the life of Christ. The eglise de notre dame des anges on rue Dumas was built in 1865. The church has an oil painting of our lady of Assumption that was donated by Napoleon iii.

Temples
in Pondicherry: There are many temples in pondicherry that were erected by the Cholas between the 10th and 12th centuary most of them are dedicated to the local goddesses Of the villages where they were built. A few temples dedicated to lord vinayaka or ganapathy. Auroville: It is about 10km from the center. The place has been converted into a lush green cover from a highly eroded area by 25 years of sheer hard work. Auroville at the moment is formed of several communities scattered along the border of Pondicherry and Tamilnadu.

Day 04: Pondicherry – Tanjore temple-tanjore

Tanjore:
Tanjore lies to the east of trichy and has the reputation as the Rice bowl of Tamil Nadu Tamilnadu University recently situated here and is devoted to the growth of Tamil literature and language. One of the best temples in south India Brihadeeswarar temple the big temple built by the greatest chola emperor Raja raja chola is that dynasty’s finest contribution to Dravidian Temple architecture. If the big temple is an ancient Landmark of Tanjore.

The Brahadeeswarar temple:
Built by the great chola king Raja raja in the 10th centuary AD. Is an outstanding example of chola architecture.

The Palace:
The palace near in the temple is a vast building of masonry built partly by the Nayakas around 1550AD. And partly by the Marathas.

Art gallery:
In the palace there are a number of granites and bronze, statues of the chola period.

Rajarajan Mani Mandapam:
During the 8th Tamil conference this mandapam was built. It is having a small garden with children play materials.

SchwartzChurch:
Built in 1779AD by Raja sarfoji in token of his affection for the Rev.Schwartz Of the Danish mission (in the palace garden).

Day 05: Tanjore – Thrichy

Rock
fortTemple: This temple crowns a gigantic piece of rock soring 83meters upwards from the encircling plains.RockForttemple. The sree Thayumana swamy dedicated to lord shiva is halfway up. The temple houses a100 pillared hall and a vimana covered with gold. The southern face of the rock dating back to the pallava period. Are several beautifully carved rock cut cave temple of the pallava period. Built by the nayaks who were the founders of the city. 

SriranganathaswamyTemple: Ranganathaswamy temple is 6km away from this place. The   temple is among the most venerated temples to lord Vishnu in south India Enclosed by Rectangular walled courtyards this 13th centuary has 21 gopurams. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu is very well preserved with exceptional carving and numerous other shrines to dedicate various god.

St.Johns church:
built in 1812 this church has superb setting and wonderful architecture. Its Louvered doors when opened turn the church into an airy pavilion.

Meenakshi Temple:
It is near chithirai street there are two sanctuaries in the temple one is Meenakshi (The fish eyed goddess consort of shiva) and the other is to shiva in the form of Sundereswar the gopurams have been repainted in bright colours. The high point of the temple is the hall of a thousands pillars built around 1560.meenakshi-temple This hall adorned with 985 beautiful images the temple art museum in the hall of thousand pillars. Among the mandapams the kambattadi mandapam is outstanding for its excellent sculptured representation of the manifestation of Shiva on the pillars.

Thirumala nayak mahal: This Palace was built in 1636 by king thirumalai nayak with the help of an Italian architect. The original palace complex was four times bigger than the present structure. This palace consisted mainly of two parts namely swargavilasa and Rangavilasa.

Gandhi
Museum: This museum which is house in the 300-year-old Managammal palace is dedicated to Gandhiji’s father of our nation. It has a collection of Gandhi’s books and letters. It contains khadi and village industries section and a south Indian handicrafts section.

Day 07: Madurai- Thekkady (Periyar)

Kumily: This plantation town closely associated with thekkady. It is situated on the outskirts of the periyar sanctuary. It is an important shopping center and spice trade center is here.

Periyar is one of the largest wildlife reserves in India; the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is more popular as a tiger reserve. A boat ride on the splendid Periyar Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary

Day 08: Thekkady – Kumarakom
